5. Accountability Strategies
Accountability is a very common strategy people use to stick to their goals, particularly when it comes to long-term goals such as weight loss and habit building. From accountability buddies to accountability coaches, to signing contracts and making bets.
Common sense tells us it’s easier to achieve a long-term goal or a major behaviour change if we get others involved, whether as support and cheerleaders, or to accompany us on the journey.
Generally accepted wisdom is that making your resolutions public, even if it’s only disclosing it to a friend, or close family members, helps us keep those commitments. It’s the sense of social accountability, having someone expecting something of you, that is at work here. But new evidence suggests this may not necessarily be the case. Research (7, 8) shows people who publicly commit to achieving identity goals (goals that influence the sense of who they are, e.g., career-related goals, behaviours linked with parenting, etc.) are less likely to actually achieve those goals because just talking about their goal made them think they’ve achieved it.
Accountability works through two main mechanisms:
Social support
Loss aversion (9)
